Track grocery prices across the stores near you.
See what an item costs at nearby stores in search results — with prices logged by shoppers like you.
Grocery prices move constantly and vary store to store. Westie is built on prices that shoppers capture while they shop: point your camera at a shelf tag, and Westie reads the price, the product and the size off the photo and files it against the right store. Everyone searching afterwards gets the benefit.
Find an item by name, PLU code or barcode, then compare current prices across the stores closest to you — including whether something is priced each or per pound.
A guided three-shot capture — barcode, product, shelf tag — reads the price and product details automatically, so logging a price takes seconds instead of typing.
Follow other shoppers to see the prices they find, and share a price you've logged with anyone.
A look at Westie on Android.
Westie asks for the minimum it needs to log a price accurately and show you prices nearby. You can decline or revoke any of them in your device settings.
| Permission | Android identifier | Why Westie needs it |
|---|---|---|
| Camera | CAMERA |
To scan barcodes and photograph shelf tags, products and receipts when you add a price. The camera is only active while you're on a capture screen; Westie does not record video or audio. |
| Location (precise) | ACCESS_FINE_LOCATION |
To identify which store you're standing in so a price you log is attached to the right one, and to sort search results by how close each store is. Grocery stores sit close together, so precise location is what makes the right-store match reliable. |
| Location (approximate) | ACCESS_COARSE_LOCATION |
The same purpose at lower precision — used when you grant approximate rather than precise location. |
| Photo location | ACCESS_MEDIA_LOCATION |
When you pick a photo you already took — a receipt or shelf tag from earlier — Westie reads the GPS coordinates saved inside that photo so it can work out which store it was taken at. Without this permission Android strips that information and the store has to be chosen by hand. |
| Notifications | POST_NOTIFICATIONS |
To tell you when the photos from a shopping trip have finished processing and your prices are ready to review. |
| Internet | INTERNET |
To search prices and sync the prices and photos you log with the Westie service. |
What Westie does not do.
Westie never accesses your location in the background — only while the app is open and you're using a feature that needs it. It does not read your photo library beyond the individual photos you pick, and it contains no advertising, analytics or tracking SDKs. It does not access your contacts, microphone, call history or messages.
